Coming Up @ Acacia.......
|
|
|
Thurs 7th March is world book day.
Fact:
Starting in kindergarten, if a student reads 20 minutes a day at home, they will hear 1.8 million words per year. They will have read for 851 hours by 6th grade and on standardized tests, they will likely score better than 90% of their peers.
Sponsored read
To celebrate and encourage a lifelong love of reading at home and school Acacia will be running a sponsored read between now and World Book Day. Children can spend extra time reading alone or being read to (on top of the recommended 10/20 minutes a day). They set themselves a target for how many extra hours they are going to read for and get sponsored for this by as many people as possible. For the younger children, parents can set a target for themselves to read more to their children than they usually do. All the money raised will be spent across the year groups on new books for the library.

Reading corners
We are holding a competition for each Grade to produce the best reading corner. Planning is already underway and the children are very enthused; this is another way in which we are trying to foster a real lifelong love of reading. The Grade that wins will have a pool party at school with sponsored pizzas and drinks (This prize hasn't been arranged yet so any ideas of making this possible would be warmly welcomed).
Assembly
We would love if any parents/carers would volunteer to share one of their favourite childhood books with the children. We thought that this could be done for a few minutes during assembly in the weeks leading up to World Book Day.
ELC Book of the Week
The earlier we can foster this love of reading, the better. We thought it might be a nice idea for children in reception and nursery to bring in a book from home every week and let other children in the class read it. If everybody joins in with this, all children in reception and nursery will be able to enjoy each others’ books. The child who owns the book then takes it home again and the can bring another in again.
Costumes
As in previous years, we are requesting all children to dress up as characters from their favourite books. There were some fabulous efforts last year!
Cushions
Thank you to those parents who have sent their children in with cushions. They help provide a personalised space for your child to use as they sit down and really enjoy the reading experience. They can also contribute to a exciting reading corner in each classroom and help your child’s class win the competition.
PARENT WORKSHOPs FOR NURSERY/RECEPTION/YEAR 1 & 2
Please do sign the list outside Sarah’s office to confirm whether you will be attending the phonics workshop and whether you would like to purchase a home learning pack. The pack will include flashcards you can use to reinforce your child’s learning at home and will cost K30. Please do bring a USB and we can give you access to other resources you can use

A Plea....If you have bougainvillea in your garden and know how to take cuttings, please bring as many cuttings as you can to the school for a hedge around the car park. They can be dropped off outside the office.

In line with our drive to encourage more reading, we would like everyone to bring their own personal reading pillow to school.
